ABC Press Information: ABC, a leader in entertainment, news and sports television programming, has been a wholly owned division of The Walt Disney Company since 1996. The television network officially celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003 — commemorating the birth of ABC as we know it today. Taking the helm of a relatively tiny and virtually bankrupt ABC in 1953, Leonard Goldenson defied conventional wisdom that saw no prospect of survival for the struggling company. In the process, he transformed the entire television industry and set the stage for ABC to become a global media powerhouse in the U.S. and more than 120 other countries. Among the many pioneering steps, bringing ABC from obscurity to prominence, was the network's first association with Walt Disney in 1954. The Disneyland series debuted that year and, now almost half a century later, it remains signature ABC programming as The Wonderful World of Disney. ABC has also been the home to many other of network television's most popular entertainment series: The Lone Ranger, Leave it to Beaver, The Addams Family, Ben Casey, Batman, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Untouchables, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, The Love Boat, The Brady Bunch, Fantasy Island, Charlie's Angels, Dynasty, Growing Pains, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, Grace Under Fire, Home Improvement, Twin Peaks, NYPD Blue, The Drew Carey Show, The Practice, My Wife and Kids, According to Jim, and Alias. Through these and other programs, ABC played a seminal role in the development of now-classic television genres such as Westerns, medical dramas and detective shows. ABC's innovations also extended to the realm of made-for-TV movies, novels for television and miniseries — including the unprecedented cultural phenomenon of Roots. Viewers have come to know and trust ABC for its award-winning ABC News franchise which includes the breakthrough late-night Nightline telecast, as well as many other widely watched telecasts such as Good Morning America to World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Innovation and cutting-edge technology are now synonymous with ABC Sports, home to Monday Night Football, the most successful sports series in history. During afternoon hours, and with audience favorites such as General Hospital and All My Children, ABC Daytime has consistently won the ratings crown for more than a quarter-century. Prior to its merger into The Walt Disney Company in 1996, the network had been an operating unit of Capital Cities/ABC since 1986. See Stock Certificate Expert Bob Kerstein, CEO
