The occasion was the dedication of the new temple by the congregation, which was organized thirty-four years ago by the Frenchspeaking natives of Alsace of the Hebrew faith. For many years the congregation -worshipped In Forty-fifth Street, between Second and Third Avenues, but the neighborhood becoming inconvenient and unsuitable, the property was disposed of and the erection 01 a new place of worship, to coat $55,OOO, -was started.
Among the members of the congregation are David Metzger, Charles Meyer. David Werdensohlag, Adolph Pawel, Hoses 8. Lasserath, Henry Werl. Jacob Dahlman, Herman Cohen. Samuel Ulmar, Bernard Metzger, Matthew Well, 8. Kellar, Felix Dry, Max Goldsmith. Henry Wilde, Mrs. H. Kalm, Mrs. Henry Herrmann, and others. The late Solomon N. Cohen, who was a well-known reporter, was Secretary of this congregation for thirty-two years, and a marble tablet memorializing him is displayed on the wall opposite the main entrance. Of the original members of the congregation only one. Samuel Ulmar, Is living, and he was selected to light the B "Her Tomld," which will remain lighted In front of the ark as long as the temple remains a place of worship. The ceremonies included an overture by the organist, a chanting of the service by the cantor and choir, memorial prayer by the Rev. 6. Hirsch. minister of the congregation; the lighting of the " Menorati" lights, presentation of the key by Miss Julia Weill. Torah procession, and addresses by Judge MoAdam, Jacob A. Cantor, Judge Goldlogle, and Ferdinand Levy. The Torah procession was exceedingly impressive, the scrolls being carried by the oldest members of the congregation, wno passed three times around the temple, preceded by the rabbi in the vestments of his order, chanting the service, to which the choir sang the responses. As they marched upon the altar to deposit the scrolls in the Tabernacle. Coroner Levy religiously touched each scroll with his fingers and pressed the latter to his lips. The church was crowded.
