Fruit and vegetable labels were lithographed and made for use on wooden fruit and vegetable shipping crates beginning in the 1890's. Once companies were able to use cardboard cartons in the 1960's, the lithographed labels were no longer used by growers or shippers. Over the years, thousands of these original lithographed crate labels were found in warehouses and other storage facilities, and gained popularity by collectors beginning in the 1970's. These are collected because of their beauty, history, subject matter, location, and scarcity, among other reasons. They are a popular item for framing and decorating homes and offices.
