Beautifully engraved certificate from the Gazogenes et Carbonisation Barbier issued
in 1925. This historic document has an
ornate border around it. This item is hand signed by the Company’s Administrateur and is
over 78 years old. There are 30 unused coupons on the bottom of this certificate not shown in the scan.
During the World War I, there was a lack of gasoline. This company made a device that could be attached to an automobile. By burning wood combined with moisture, this device produced methane gas that would actually run the automobiles.
The carbonisation of wood is brought about by heating it, in the absence of air, to temperatures sufficiently high for it to undergo substantial thermal decomposition. Temperatures employed are usually in the range 400-500°C and a mixture of gases, vapours and a solid residue (charcoal) results.
