Davis-Daly Copper Company (Specimen) - Butte District, Silver Bow County, Montana

Beautifully engraved RARE specimen certificate from the Daivs-Daly Copper Company. This historic document was printed by the John A. Lowell Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignettes of an eagle and mining scenes.

DAVIS-DALY COPPER COMPANY

Located in southwestern sections of Butte District, Silver Bow County, Montana. Total holdings of mineralized and other lands about 400 acres. Copper, silver and zinc. Incorporated 1908, Maine laws; capitalized at $10,050,000—670,000 shares, par $15. The DavisDaly Copper Company is successor to the Davis-Daly Estates Copper Company stock of the latter being. exchanged for that of the former on the share for share basis, plus an assessment of $2 per share, payable in installments of 50 cents each, which have all been paid. The Smokehouse Mining Company, whose property consists of a 50 x 125-foot lot in Butte, is controlled by the Davis-Daly Copper Company.

Work has been confined to the Colorado claim of the DavisDaly property, which is opened by a 3-compartment shaft to a depth of 1,800 feet, with drifts in ore on the 1,400 and 1,500 levels. In October, 1909, ore shipments of 150 tons per day were being made, and management predicted an output of 500 tons ore per day by January, 1910, as quite a large tonnage of ore has been blocked out. About Specimen Certificates

Specimen Certificates are actual certificates that have never been issued. They were usually kept by the printers in their permanent archives as their only example of a particular certificate. Sometimes you will see a hand stamp on the certificate that says "Do not remove from file".

Specimens were also used to show prospective clients different types of certificate designs that were available. Specimen certificates are usually much scarcer than issued certificates. In fact, many times they are the only way to get a certificate for a particular company because the issued certificates were redeemed and destroyed. In a few instances, Specimen certificates were made for a company but were never used because a different design was chosen by the company.

These certificates are normally stamped "Specimen" or they have small holes spelling the word specimen. Most of the time they don't have a serial number, or they have a serial number of 00000. This is an exciting sector of the hobby that has grown in popularity over the past several years.
