Beautiful stock Certificate from the Rutland Marble Company issued in 1864. This historic document was printed by the Hatch & Company and has an ornate border around it with a George Washington Tax Stamp attached to its face. The tax stamps were used during the Civil War and into the reconstruction period. This item is signed by the company's president, Elisa Riggs and is over 160 years old.
The recorded beginning of the marble industry in Rutland dates back into the early 1800's. Various individuals dug out marble for grave stones near the village of West Rutland. This started a thriving local business. The Rutland Marble Company went on to be the Vermont Marble Company and is still very successful. The Rutland Marble Company was incorporated in the State of New York and supplied many gravestones for the fallen soldiers during the Civil War.
