Celanese operates the acetate and basic chemicals business of Germany's Hoechst AG. The
company's cellulose acetate is used to make filter products, filament for apparel, and
polybenzimidazole (PBI), which is used to make the outer-shell of firefighters' gear. The chemicals
division makes acetyls such as vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), a key ingredient in everything from
paint and glue to candy and gum. Methyls and acrylates by Celanese are used to produce methanol (a
basic building block chemical) and formaldehyde (a key raw material in construction). The firm's oxo
products and amines end up in cleaners, solvents, and inks. Celanese and another Hoechst subsidiary,
Ticona, are being spun off to form Celanese AG.
