Certificate Vignette Railroad tycoon J. Henry Meyer -- namesake of the J. Henry Meyer Memorial Library at Stanford University-- built the Mediterranean-style house now known as the Meyer-Buck House on an 11-acre estate in 1920, after a Victorian house he owned on the property was destroyed by fire. Meyer's two daughters, Olga Meyer and Alice Buck Meyer -- who were major financial supporters of the university -- willed the house, its contents and the estate to Stanford University, which acquired the property in 1979.
