Beautifully engraved RARE certificate from the Indianapolis & Vincennes Railroad issued in 1867. This historic document has an ornate border around it with a vignette of the state seal top right. This item has been handsigned by the Company's President ( Ambrose E. Burnside ) and Asst. Secretary. There are very few known examples of these certificates (with the state seal) signed by Ambrose E. Burnside. Burnside, Ambrose Everett 1824-1881 Union general during Civil War. Commanded Army of Potomac (1862-1863). Opposed Lincoln for Presidency in 1864. Governor of Rhode Island (1866-1869). U.S. Senator (1875-1881). Source of the American term 'sideburns.' In July 1868, the Indianapolis & Vincennes Railroad opened for business between Indianapolis and Martinsville, Indiana.
