Beautiful certificate from the Mutual Telephone Company issued no later than 1892. This historic document was printed by Hawaiian Gazette Print Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of a Hawaiian girl fishing next to a butterfly and palm tree. Issued to name, number of shares and serial number may differ. but all other information will be the same in all material respects. This item has the signatures of the Company's President, H A Widemann and Secretary, C.O. Bergery and is over 131 years old.

H. A. Widemann (1822-1899). Widemann was an early settler in Hawaii. He was an Attorney General, judge, postmaster of Waianae, a coffee grower, and the founder of the Waianae Sugar Company which was started in 1878. 1883: King Kalakaua grants Mutual Telephone Co. a charter to provide service in the islands. 1954: Mutual changes its name to Hawaiian Telephone Co. 1967: GTE Corp. acquires the company, which becomes GTE Hawaiian Tel. 2000: GTE merges with Bell Atlantic to form Verizon, spawning the Verizon Hawaii moniker.
