Beautiful certificate from the Mutual Telephone Company issued no later than 1892. This historic document was printed by Hawaiian Gazette Print Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of a Hawaiian girl fishing next to a butterfly and palm tree. This item has the signatures of the Company's President, H A Widemann and Secretary, C.O. Bergery and is over 131 years old.

H. A. Widemann (1822-1899). Widemann was an early settler in Hawaii. He was an Attorney General, judge, postmaster of Waianae, a coffee grower, and the founder of the Waianae Sugar Company which was started in 1878. 1883: King Kalakaua grants Mutual Telephone Co. a charter to provide service in the islands. 1954: Mutual changes its name to Hawaiian Telephone Co. 1967: GTE Corp. acquires the company, which becomes GTE Hawaiian Tel. 2000: GTE merges with Bell Atlantic to form Verizon, spawning the Verizon Hawaii moniker.
