Beautiful certificate from the National Exchange Hotel Company issued in 1864. This historic document was printed by W.B. Cooke & Company and has an ornate border around it with a tax stamp on its face. This item has the signatures of the Company's President and Secretary and is over 143 years old. The National Exchange Hotel - Built in 1854, the National Hotel is one of the oldest continuous operating hotels in California. It was used as a stagecoach, telegraph, mail, and express center during the mining days. It was also a popular gathering place. Through the doors of the National Hotel have walked giants of politics, art, theater and industry. Among its guests have been presidents, senators, governors and supreme court justices. NO. 899 National Landmark - NATIONAL HOTEL - The National Exchange Hotel opened for business on August 20, 1856, the exterior is virtually unchanged since its construction as three brick buildings in 1856.
