Beautifully engraved SPECIMEN note certificate from National Victoria and Grey Trustco Limited dated 1988. This historic document was printed by Thomas de La Rue and Company Limited and has an
ornate border around it. This item has the printed signatures of the Company's President and Chief Executive Officer and its Controller and is over 16 years old.
In 1989, the National Victoria and Grey Trustco Limited changed the name to the National Trustco. On August 5, 1997 the Canadian Federal Government Approved the Acquisition of National Trustco Inc. by the Bank of Nova Scotia.
National Trustco Inc. provided personal trust and investment management and diversified personal and corporate financial services through a network of over 180 branches and automated banking machines, located across Canada, for a group of trust and loan corporations with corporate assets of $16.0 billion and assets under administration of $41.7 billion. Interest on fees and loans accounted for 81% of fiscal 1995 revenues; other interest income, 10% and other non-interest income, 9%.
Specimen Certificates are actual certificates that have never been issued. They were usually kept by the printers in their permanent archives as their only example of a particular certificate. Sometimes you will see a hand stamp on the certificate that says "Do not remove from file".
Specimens were also used to show prospective clients different types of certificate designs that were available. Specimen certificates are usually much scarcer than issued certificates. In fact, many times they are the only way to get a certificate for a particular company because the issued certificates were redeemed and destroyed. In a few instances, Specimen certificates were made for a company but were never used because a different design was chosen by the company.
These certificates are normally stamped "Specimen" or they have small holes spelling the word specimen. Most of the time they don't have a serial number, or they have a serial number of 00000. This is an exciting sector of the hobby that has grown in popularity over the past several years.
