Beautifully engraved certificate from the Board of Education of the city of Chicago issued in 1935. This historic document was printed by the Columbian Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of an oil burning lamp sitting on a book. This item is hand signed by the president of the board of education, the secretary of the board of education, the mayor of Chicago (Edward J. Kelly), and the comptroller of Chicago and is over 65 years old. The certificate has some foxing on the the border. This certificate was issued in the midst of the depression. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Ill. Edward J. Kelly was a rough-hewn politician who became one of Chicago's most powerful mayors. With the help of Pat Nash, Mayor Kelly built the Democratic Machine of which Daley was to be the chief beneficiary. An enterprising political strategist, Kelly amassed a concentration of political power by drawing traditionally Republican black voters into the Democratic fold, allying the Machine with New Deal policies, and tapping the resources of organized crime.
