Daynes Music is the oldest music store west of the Mississippi and started business in a log building in 1862. The building was located just east on first south in downtown Salt Lake City. Brigham Young met the second wave of Pioneers at the grounds where the City and County building now stands. He found young Joseph Daynes playing a little Harmonium (organ). President Young exclaimed "this young man will be the Tabernacle organist." Joseph was only 11 years old. He was sent to New York to study and returned home to become the first Tabernacle organist at the age of 16. John Daynes, Joseph's father, founded Danes Music in 1862. He was Brigham Young's watchmaker. When not performing, Joseph helped his father at the store. Later, Royal W. Daynes, his son from John's second wife, became the president. Daynes Music began representing Steinway & Sons in 1873. History from Wikipedia and OldCompany.com.
