Stock certificate receipt from the Irvine Citrus Association issued in 1937. This historic document has an ornate border around it. This item has been hand signed by the Company's President,Carl V. Newman and Secretary, and is over 74 years old. Carl V. Newman, of Tustin, widely-known avocado and citrus grower and cooperative marketing official, passed away March 19, 1942, at the age of 61. Mr. Newman was a native of Akron, Iowa, and a graduate of Pomona College. In 1925 he was elected President of Calavo Growers of California, the marketing cooperative association, and held that post continuously since that time. Newman was also President of Francis Citrus Association and Irvine Citrus Association; and was a Director at the Los Angeles Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco since 1937. Mr. Newman spent a lifetime in California agriculture. At the time of his death he was Manager of the San Joaquin Fruit & Investment Company ranch at Tustin, and of the Utt Development Company plantings at Oxnard. He was responsible for the development of some of the most extensive avocado, citrus, and walnut plantings in Southern California. Mr. Newman joined this society in 1918 and always gave it his active support. Seven articles by Mr. Newman have been printed in our Yearbooks. Surviving Mr. Newman are his wife, Florence W., and two sons. John V. Newman of Oxnard and Lt. Phillip W., now serving overseas; a brother. C. A. Newman, and three sisters, Mrs. G. McCrossen, Mrs. M.
