The New England Historic Genealogical Society, founded in 1845, and is the country's oldest genealogical organization. The five charter members were (Charles Ewer, Lemuel Shattuck, Samuel G. Drake, John Wingate Thornton, and William H. Montague). The founders, according to the New England Historic Genealogical Society, consisted of a group of merchants and book dealers, devoted to collecting, preserving, and publishing genealogical and historical matter relating to New England families.
