WARREN E. BURGER (1907-1995), appointed by Nixon, served as Chief Justice from 1969-1986. WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS (1898-1980), appointed by FDR, was an Associate Justice for 36 years (1939-1975), the longest term in U.S. history. WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, JR. (1906-1997), appointed by Eisenhower, was Associate Justice from 1956-1990. POTTER STEWART (1915-1985), also appointed by Eisenhower, was Associate Justice from 1958-1981. BYRON WHITE (1917-2002), appointed by JFK, was an Associate Justice from 1962-1993. THURGOOD MARSHALL (1908-1993), the first Black American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, was appointed by LBJ and served as an Associate Justice from 1967-1991. HARRY A. BLACKMUN (1908-1999), appointed by Nixon, served as an Associate Justice from 1970-1994. LEWIS F. POWELL, JR. (1907-1998), also appointed by Nixon, was an Associate Justice from 1972-1987. WILLIAM H. REHNQUIST (1924-2005), another Nixon appointee, was an Associate Justice from 1972-1986, when he succeeded Burger, who had retired, as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1974, Chief Justice Burger spoke for a unanimous Court upholding a subpoena for the Watergate tapes which resulted in President Nixon's resignation. In 1986, Chief Justice Burger retired and was succeeded by Associate Justice Rehnquist who served until his death in 2005.
