Beautifully lithograph certificate from the Carbon Company issued in 1924. This historic document was printed by the Mysell Rollins Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of mountainous terrain with a few winding roads. This item is hand signed by the Company's President ( J. Cal Ewing ) and Secretary ( Frank Thompson ) and is over 80 years old.
Certificate Vignette J. Cal Ewing was one of the principal organizers & founders of Baseball's Pacific Coast League. Shortly after the great earthquake & fire of 1906, Ewing saved the league by infusing his personal funds & bailing out several struggling franchises. While he owned the Oakland franchise for almost three decades, he also had a financial interest in the San Francisco Seals for a time In 1914, J. Cal Ewing paid $100,000 and built the most modern minor league park in the country. Mr. Ewing named the new stadium Ewing Field. In the off season Mr. Ewing sold the Seals to the Berry Brothers, owners of the L.A. Angels. The new bosses immediately stated that because of the weather conditions, they would never play at Ewing Field. A few months later, through negotiation and big money, the Berrys' achieved what J. Cal Ewing could not - ownership of Recreation Park. In 1915, the Seals returned to Rec Park and brand new Ewing Field was abandoned.
