DESCRIPTION: Circus Circus Hotel, Casino and Theme Park was the first property of what has become Mandalay Resort Group, a corporation that currently owns or has interest in 11 gaming properties nationwide. First publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 1983, the corporation today controls more hotel rooms in Las Vegas than any of its competitors. The hallmark of Circus Circus lies under the legendary Big Top, where the world's greatest circus acts perform on the Midway Stage. The Adventuredome at Circus Circus is America's largest indoor theme park. The mega-resort has 3,773 guest rooms, the 399-space Circusland recreational vehicle park, a wedding chapel, four swimming pools, four restaurants and the world famous Circus Buffet. PROPERTY: Situated on 68.30 acres, the buildings encompass 2,870,085 square feet. Casino Tower: Two 15-story hotel towers with 776 guest rooms, which were fully renovated in 1998. Situated in the center of the property, the Casino Tower features two casinos, a race and sports book, circus arena, carnival midway, game arcade, multiple dining facilities, wedding chapel and retail outlets. The Midway Stage is located above the main casino on the midway mezzanine, and is featured in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest permanent circus covering an area of 120,000 square feet, capped by a 90-foot Big Top. Skyrise Tower: A 29-story tower with 1,188 guest rooms includes its own casino, pool and connection to the shopping Promenade. West Tower: The 35-story tower with 999 guest rooms was added in 1997. Circusland RV Park: The Park features 399 spaces located on a 38.8 acres site. Mandalay Resort Group Chronology of Growth 1968 - On October 18, Circus Circus celebrates the grand opening of its casino located on the Las Vegas Strip. The property consists of a casino, circus arena, carnival midway and restaurants under a permanent Big Top facade. Circus Circus does not offer hotel rooms. 1972 - Circus Circus' first hotel, a 15-story Casino Tower with 400 guest rooms, is completed. 1974 - Assumption of operation by William G. Bennett and William N. Pennington. 1975 - 395 guest rooms are added to the original Casino Tower in May for a total of 795 rooms. 1978 - Circus Circus Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nev., opens on July 1 with 104 rooms and the same architectural and entertainment concepts as the Las Vegas property. A five-story parking garage with 1,000 spaces is completed at Circus Circus Las Vegas. 1979 - Circusland recreational vehicle park is completed with 421 spaces. Full utility 50-amp hookups, swimming pools, Jacuzzi, saunas, 24-hour convenience store, fenced tots' playground, pet runs, on-site disposal station, game arcade, Laundromat and grass areas are available. Acquisition of Slots-A-Fun Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, immediately adjacent to Circus Circus. 1980 - Circus Circus Manor rooms open adjacent to Circus Circus Las Vegas near Circusland RV Park with 810 rooms in five 3-story buildings. Parking areas for each building, in-room kitchenettes, its own swimming pool and lobby. 1981 - Inauguration of space age Circus Sky Shuttle, linking major areas of the Las Vegas resort. Dual pink and white air conditioned cabins glide along an elevated guide-way spanning Circus Circus Drive 18 feet above street level. Sky Shuttle can carry up to 1,200 passengers per hour. Fully automated, pollution free, energy saving and quiet. Acquisition of Silver City Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, approximately 1/4 mile south of Circus Circus. The exterior has been totally redesigned and interior expanded and remodeled. Opening of 22-story addition to Circus Circus Reno, for a total of 725 rooms and suites. 1982 - Completion of $7 million expansion and renovation at Circus Circus Las Vegas, including enlarged casino, dining and valet parking facilities, interior decoration, and a new front entrance marquee. 1983 - Circus Circus Enterprises, Inc., becomes publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Acquisition of Edgewater Hotel and Casino on the Colorado River in Laughlin, Nev. 1984 - Completion in July of 450 new rooms at the Edgewater for a total of 600 rooms, as well as complete exterior and interior renovation, including expanded casino area. New facilities include a race and sports book. 1985 - A second 1,000-car high-rise parking garage is completed at Circus Circus Las Vegas. Construction begins on the 1,188 rooms, 29-story Skyrise Tower at Circus Circus Las Vegas. Topping off ceremony takes place on September 25. Opening of new West Casino at Circus Circus Las Vegas adds 17,000 square feet of gaming space along with a new bar and snack bar. July opening of 27-story Skyway Tower at Circus Circus Reno, for a total of 1,625 rooms and suites. Announcement of plans to build a second resort in Laughlin, Nev., with an authentic replica of a three-deck Mississippi paddle wheeler, to be called the Colorado Belle. 1986 - Grand opening of the Circus Circus Skyrise Tower at Circus Circus Las Vegas on February 28. It features bars, dining areas, a swimming pool, a third high-rise garage, a 10,000 square-foot race and sports book and a 17,000 square-foot casino making the resort the largest casino in the world with over 100,000 square feet of gaming space. A new arm of the Circus Sky Shuttle is added as is the Circus Skywalk, a link to the Skyrise Tower and the Big Top. Ground-breaking for the Colorado Belle on March 28th. 1987 - The 1,238-room Colorado Belle is topped off on March 26. Grand opening is held on July 1. 1988 - On April 1 Circus Circus Enterprises acquires 117 acres of Las Vegas Strip land, 70 acres of which will become designated the site for a unique castle-themed resort that will become the world's largest hotel with 4,032 rooms. The resort-to-be was officially dubbed Excalibur on September 28 following an international $25,000 "Name the Castle" contest, which drew more than 183,000 entries. Ground-breaking ceremonies for the Excalibur are held on October 7. 1989 - Ground-breaking for the new 26-story Edgewater Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nev., occurs on December 1. Includes a new six- story, 954-car parking garage. 1990 - Grand opening of Excalibur Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip on June 19. Excalibur becomes the world's largest hotel. 1991 - Grand opening is held on February 8 for the new 970-room 26-story Edgewater Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nev. Circus Circus Enterprises announces plans on November 14 for construction of a new pyramid-shaped resort in Las Vegas to be named the Luxor. The unusual 2,526-room hotel adjacent to the Circus-owned Excalibur, will use "inclinators" as opposed to elevators because of the pyramid shape. Luxor will emphasize the mystical qualities of ancient pyramids, and will be another first of its kind on the Las Vegas Strip. 1992 - Ground-breaking for Luxor on March 16; opening slated for October 1993. Circus Circus Las Vegas announces plans to build America's largest indoor theme park, The Adventuredome, on August 26. The first theme park in Las Vegas, the vast $90 million dome will feature the world's only indoor double-loop, double-corkscrew roller coaster. The park will be open 365 days a year with a constant temperature of 72 degrees. 1993 - The Adventuredome opens to the public on August 23. Circus Circus Enterprises acquires ownership or partnership interest in the Railroad Pass Hotel and Casino in Henderson, Nev., and the Nevada Landing Hotel and Casino and the Gold Strike Hotel and Casino, both in Jean, Nev. Circus Circus Enterprises announces a joint venture with Mirage Resorts to build a new Las Vegas Strip resort, the Monte Carlo. Ground-breaking for the Monte Carlo is held on April 19, a joint venture between Mirage Resorts and Circus Circus Enterprises. Grand opening is scheduled for the first day of summer in 1996, June 21. Grand opening of The Silver Legacy, another joint-venture between the Eldorado Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nev., and Circus Circus Enterprises. Circus Circus Enterprises finalizes its purchase of the Hacienda Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for $80 million and assumes operation on September 1. Monte Carlo topping-off ceremony held on December 20. 1996 - Construction begins in January on the new West Tower for Circus Circus Las Vegas. This will add 999 rooms, additional restaurants and shops to the venerable Strip property. Grand opening of the West Tower at Circus Circus Las Vegas occurs on December 23. The Four Seasons Hotel will occupy the floors from 35 to 39 and have its own entrance, check-in, dining, pool and convention area. The project is scheduled to open in early 1999.
